When you’re visiting family or friends, whether it’s for the holidays or just a simple get‑together, your usual routine will probably look a little different. That can make managing diabetes feel a bit trickier, but a little planning can help you feel more at ease while you’re away from home.

Here are some helpful ideas to try when you’re staying for a short visit or a longer trip:

  • Plan ahead. Ask your host what will be served so you know what to expect with meals and timing.
  • Make informed food choices. Review the buffet table before picking up your dinner plate. Step back and scope out your choices. Remember to use the visual of the Diabetes Plate as your guide. Fill half of your plate with non-starchy veggies first, one-quarter of your plate with lean protein, and one-quarter of your plate with quality carbohydrates.
  • Offer to bring a dish to share. People appreciate it when you contribute to a meal. Make a dish that you love and fits well in your eating plan.
  • Set boundaries. Setting boundaries is an important way to take care of yourself. Family and friends usually mean well, but they may offer foods or drinks that don’t fit your plan. They may also give advice about what not to eat.

It’s okay to say no in a calm, confident way. Having a simple phrase ready can make it easier. You might say, “Thank you for your concern, but I have a plan for managing my diabetes.”

Takeaways

Holiday gatherings and visits with family and friends can bring extra excitement and sometimes extra stress. Enjoy the special foods you choose and keep using the strategies that help you manage diabetes.
