Apple Squares are a delicious dessert that is perfect anytime of the year. This kid-approved recipe is a family favorite and a great choice for people with diabetes.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line an 8 x 8-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
In a bowl, toss the diced apples with lemon juice to prevent browning. Set it aside.
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, ground cinnamon, and salt.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk the margarine, applesauce, granulated sugar substitute, brown sugar substitute, egg, and vanilla extract.
Gradually add the butter mixture to the flour mixture, stirring until just combined.
Gently fold in the diced apples and chopped walnuts.
Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 30 to 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before using the parchment paper overhang to lift them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Once cooled, cut into 12 squares and serve.
